Red eye can be caused by a host of things including viral and bacterial infections, allergies, blepharitis (Treatment for Itchy, Red Irritated Eye Lids( known as Blepharitis) and dry eyes (Dry Eye Diagnostics and Treatments).
The inflammation present in the white of the eye is known as Conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is defined as inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is a clear transparent tissue covering the white of the eye.
Symptoms of conjunctivitis are:
Red eye
Pink eye
Glossy eye
Swelling of the eye or eyelids
A gritty feeling in one or both eyes
Itching or burning sensation in one or both eyes
Excessive tearing
Goopy or stringy discharge from one or both eyes
Pink or red discoloration to the whites of one or both eyes
Increased sensitivity to light
Eyelashes stuck together in the morning
Conjunctivitis may also cause blurry fluctuating vision. It is essential that conjunctivitis is properly diagnosed by an eye doctor because many forms of viral conjunctivitis can be highly contagious and some forms of infection can progresses leading to tissue damage, and in some cases loss of vision.
